Advocate Series Facilitating BrightBirth Bringing a baby into the world is no easy task! It affects a mom physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. The key to a positive birth experience is preparation. Authored and presented by Katie Casey, certified labor doula, trained postpartum doula, trained childbirth educator, and accredited breastfeeding counselor, this six-part series will give you the tools to effectively facilitate BrightBirth Academy, a childbirth class in your facility. From education on how the body is designed to give birth, all the way to the baby’s first weeks, this Lesson 1: Why and Overview Why should you provide Childbirth Education? This lesson provides you with the benefits of childbirth education for both your organization and your clients. It also explains how the facilitator course is structured with videos and supplemental materials and how the client course, BrightBirth Academy, can be presented using BrightCourse. Lesson 2: Her Body and How Labor Works Lesson two trains you to teach a mom about her body and labor. Using both purchased and homemade models, Katie demonstrates the parts of the body and how they work together to successfully deliver the baby. This lesson will also explain the various stages of labor and hormones involved in the labor and delivery process. Lesson 3: Natural Birth A woman’s body is well equipped to bring a baby into this world. And while some of your clients may not start off desiring a natural, unmedicated birth, it’s still important to teach these skills so that they can make a well-informed decision. They may also be inspired to give it a try! This lesson equips you to present natural childbirth to your clients. You will learn about pain and the perfectly designed flood of hormones that work together to bring a baby into the world. You’ll be introduced to the benefits both mom and baby will experience. And finally, you’ll learn about various natural pain relief options. Lesson 4: Being Informed and Decision Making Giving your client the right tools to make difficult decisions during labor is vital to a healthy birth. This lesson will introduce the B.R.A.I.N. method which can be used to help a mom and her support people think through interventions proposed by her medical team. Katie will work through each letter of the B.R.A.I.N. acronym with real clients in a birth class. With these examples, you can confidently roleplay various situations with your clients in the classroom. Lesson 5: Medical Pain Relief, Interventions, and Procedures Having an unmedicated birth is not for every mom and it’s our responsibility to inform moms on all their options. In this lesson, Katie will introduce the various medical pain relief options, as well as the various medical interventions and procedures a mom might encounter during labor. She will teach about the “cascade of interventions”and show you how to demonstrate them in the classroom. Lesson 6: Planning for Birth This final lesson will introduce several things to consider when writing a birth plan and a simple way to present them. Using roleplay examples, Katie explains the various considerations while highighting the benefits and disadvantages of each choice. This lesson will also cover the events that take place after the baby is born including delivering the placenta and infant procedures.
