Lesson 2: Understanding Power and Control in Intimate Partner Relationships While it is natural to want to jump right into identifying abuse in your clients’ lives, you first must lay a foundation of knowledge on domestic abuse and its cycle. Most people experiencing abuse don’t recognize domestic abuse because of how they define it. You will receive an in-depth understanding of psychological, property, and verbal abuse, and much more. You will also learn about the obvious and subtle forms of domestic abuse, and how it’s less about the type of abuse and more about the misuse of power and control. Lesson 3: Recognizing the Cycle of Abuse It’s common to think that someone has an anger or substance abuse issue when really domestic abuse is a choice they are making to gain power and control over their intimate partner. Anger is an emotion, but abuse is a choice. It is a repetitive cycle. In this lesson, you will be equipped to recognize the cycle of abuse. If a person can recognize it, they can step out of the cycle and ultimately end abuse in their life. All relationships have struggles and ups and downs, but how do you know if it’s normal conflict or if it’s abuse? There are few people who have adequate training to understand abuse and address it properly. This course equips you to recognize abuse and how it differs from normal relational conflict. It will equip you to recognize warning signs of abuse and what to do about it. Most women in unhealthy relationships love their partners and just want the abuse to end. This makes this complex issue even more confusing. We will address the barriers women face by explaining that abuse is more than physical, how to recognize if someone is unhealthy, and understand the dynamics of power and control. For those who discover their relationships may be abusive, we equip them to begin taking steps toward healing. Lesson 4: Signs of Abuse in Your Clients Learn why women deny their abuse during your assessment, and how to a identify potential abuse, including signs of victimization from childhood to a current intimate relationship. You will learn possible warning signs that a client has been trafficked. You’ll gain some practical ways to begin addressing abuse even if your client doesn’t see it. Lesson 5: Understanding the Barriers of Leaving Domestic Abuse It can be very confusing to watch a victim return to their abuser over and over. Sometimes the red flags are obvious, and we wonder, “Why didn’t they just leave?” There are numerous barriers victims must overcome in order to find their way out of an abusive relationship. This is a complex issue with no easy or simple solutions. In this lesson, we cover what a victim is thinking, the obstacles she faces, and what prevents her from reaching out. Lesson 6: How to Help Your ClientsWho Have Been Abused The first step to helping your client is increasing your knowledge and understanding of abuse. In this lesson, we will talk about ways we should and shouldn’t advocate when working with a client who is experiencing intimate abuse. We will discuss how you can walk alongside them, encourage them to make the difficult but healthy choices that need to be made, and help them in their healing process.
